We’ve all had those times when we’ve seen or heard something and instantly fallen in love. A bond is forged, with whatever has captured your attention and it becomes a part of you. Well this can be said with a little band by the name of Lower Definition, or “Lower D” as they’re affectionately referred as by core fans.

Hailing from the famous San Diego music scene in California , this 5 piece Post-Hardcore unit make music the way it should be done. A perfect balance of pure aggression and energy, passion and raw emotion, that is delivered through-out each of their songs. Something many other bands could learn a thing or two from, rather than following that dangling carrot in front of them.

Their 2007 debut EP titled “Moths”, showcases everything that the band is about. Soaring melodies of vocalist Matt Geise and a sound that really does grab you by the short and curlies, pulling you in. 7 tracks just doesn’t seem to be enough, as you’re left fiending for more. Luckily for you, there is. A debut album soon followed in 2008, entitled “The Greatest Of All Lost Arts”, which did pull a few mixed emotions from a section of fans. Some feel it’s a little lacking when measured up against the very impressive “Moths”, while there are those who appreciate it of all of it’s value. Either way, it’s something that each individual listener will need to decide for themselves. “TGOALA” as it’s usually abbreviated down to, features 11 tracks of the same passion, energy and emotion that featured on the EP. However it also does have a slightly more mellow side to the album and not quite that hard-hitting impact that “Moths” had. The album also features guest vocals by Jonny Craig (Dance Gavin Dance & Emarosa) on the track “Pueblo Cicada”, which any fans of his other projects will pick up fairly quickly.

On Oct 27th, 2009, After a near year-long hiatus after the release of their album. Former Sky Eats Airplane and current Of Mice & Men front-man Jerry Roush released the following tweet on twitter, reading; “In case you guys didn’t know… the band #lowerdefinition has rekindled the flame and are working on a new record. Get siked bitches!”

Which is good news for all Lower D fans. Losing a band with such enthusiasm for making music the way it should be done, would be a great loss. If only more bands followed the ethos of these guys. Taking the music back to what it should be, artistic expression with plentiful amounts of emotion. For not only themselves but just as importantly, the fans.

A Toast To The Future…

September 9, 2010

Kind of an ironic title for the first track you’ll hear when pressing play on Emarosa’s latest effort. Their self titled album is the bands sophomore effort, following up their previous 2008 release “Relativity”, which was a bit of an up and down album, that slowly plateaued as you listened on. I guess it should have been expected. Given that Jonny Craig had only just joined the band (replacing ex frontman Chris Roetter), and only had a mere 2 weeks to write the entirety of album. This time around, a real sense of progression has been made.

Not only has their sound matured and become a lot more structured and fluid, but also lyrically, the songs are far more mature and well written. All factors pointing to the extra time the band had to fine tune everything and make an album that really is them. Filled with plenty of emotion, hooks and turns. Listeners will surely find themselves not only relating to the lyrical content featured, but also getting caught up in the feeling the actual music presents.

Another big thing that will be noticed, between the two albums, is a bit of a difference in Jonny’s vocals. Everyone knows the man can sing, hitting notes that a lot people can only dream of. However, it’s not something he’s overcooked on this album. It’s used in vast more effective ways. A more chilled approach can be heard throughout the album. As the man said himself; “Everybody knows I can sing; I don’t need to belt out notes 24/7 to prove myself”.

This effort see’s a far more cohesive end product, which openly and honestly, doesn’t feature a bad or boring track at all. This really is one of the most complete albums I’ve personally listened to in ages. With this approach these Kentuckians will surely be toasting long into the future kids.
